KUCHING: The new Ikhwanul Islam Taman Sukma Mosque, which has been relocated in front of the old mosque, was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof last night (March 4).
The new mosque, which can accommodate up to 3,000 people at a time, was built at a total cost of RM17 million — RM8 million from the state government, RM5 million from the federal government, and the rest from contributions and waqaf.
Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, said the construction of the mosque was commenced three years ago but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, he said it was finally completed this year, with only the sound system left to be installed.
“If you look at the mosque’s design, I think it’s one of Kuching’s most stunning ones.
“This new mosque was also erected as the old one could not accommodate the growth in the number of pilgrims in this area,” he told reporters.
Earlier, Fadillah had the opportunity to perform Maghrib and Isyak prayers with local residents at the new mosque. This is the first time the mosque has been used.
Also present was Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
